Averting the Economic Turndown: Lessons from Seattle Businesses

Seattle has long been home to some of the biggest names on the Fortune 500 list. Starbucks, Amazon and Nordstroms all call the city home. So, how have these giants helped to build the area’s economy?

Seattle is the home of more Starbucks per capita than any other city in the world. No surprise, as the company was founded and its headquarters remain in Seattle, employing thousands of its stores locally and internationally. Even in a recession, people do not like to give up their morning coffee which saved Starbucks from being as hard hit.

Another large company that calls Seattle home is internet giant Amazon. This online marketplace has become a huge player in e-commerce. Its continued expansion will only add to the marketplace in Seattle, bringing thousands of workers to its planned headquarters. By functioning only online, Amazon avoids the cost of brick and mortar, meaning lower prices for consumers who watch every dollar during a recession.

Nordstroms was also founded in Seattle in 1901. This big name has continued to grow through the recession, helping to maintain the Seattle economy through the slump. By diversifying its brand while maintaining its prestige and perception, Nordstroms was able to continue to grow through the recession.

The Seattle and surrounding area marketplace is overflowing with tech companies, retail stores, and energy firms based in the thriving business environment. Costco, Microsoft, T-Mobile, and Nintendo are all based near Seattle and contribute to the economic stability of the area.

The influx of thousands of workers and their families to run these companies has continued to feed the Northwest and has built a thriving metropolitan area fit for a variety of business ventures. Sunbelt Networks is proud to announce the grand opening of a new office in Seattle. “The Greater Puget Sound area has not experienced the economic downturn that most areas have seen in the last few years,” states Kirk Edwards. Business partner Randi Edwards added, “The Seattle area is a wonderful mix of cultures and nationalities with differing views and characteristics on buying, owning, and selling their businesses. Kirk and I understand these differences and adapt our skills and expertise to accomplish our clients’ goals and visions.”
