The Three Easiest Types of Businesses to Sell

Americans tend to have a strong entrepreneurial spirit, and that certainly applies to the Raleigh/Durham area. There’s something thrilling about owning your own business and setting your own rules. Many like to build a business from scratch and sell it once it’s established to go on to the next thrill.  To sell a business, it’s important to choose something that is appealing for buyers.

Here are three of the easiest types of businesses to sell:

  • Services. Service-based businesses (plumbers, bookkeeping, landscaping) are great businesses to sell. Typically, these are industries that are needed, and they already have an established client list – many under long-term contracts. This makes it appealing for a buyer to easily be able to take over without much disruption.
  • Small retail. Small retail shops like boutiques and gift shops tend to be a labor of love, and sometimes that love runs out and the business loses a little of its luster. This makes it a good business to sell because often, these businesses are set up well but they just need fresh eyes and new energy to push them to a new level. As long as it’s not too specialized and can appeal to a good section of the public, small retail shops are definitely worth a look.
  • Product line. A good established product line can be a great seller – especially one that already has a popular following. Cool gadgets, witty t-shirts…the products that all of a sudden everyone has to have are what you’re looking for. Usually, these are online-based (wholesale and retail), so other than a good website and storage space, a buyer doesn’t need a lot. As with small retail, sometimes these companies get stuck in a rut and a new owner can give them a boost.

It should go without saying that these businesses are sellable as long as they are on solid ground. If you’re interested in selling or buying a business, contact us, Sunbelt Business Brokers of Durham, to get started.
