Why a Business Broker?

Why a Business Broker?

Gary Johnson, Sunbelt Business Brokers of New Hampshire

Jay Polimeno, Sunbelt Business Brokers of New Hampshire

Every business should have a team of advisers, including an accountant, an attorney, and a financial planner.  Just as importantly, that advisory team should also include a business broker when the time comes to act on that business’ exit strategy.  Business brokers are trained, equipped, and skilled in areas that complement the skills of the rest of the advisory team.  Together, this team is a valuable resource to assist that business owner in selling his business at a fair price and in a timely fashion, and also being there to assist that seller through the business sale process.

Here is how, through the Sunbelt of New Hampshire 4-step Process:

  1. Produce a Broker’s Opinion of Value.  Our brokers are trained to re-cast an income statement and balance sheet to get to the core of a business’ true worth.  Working with multiple industry databases, we are able to value your business based on multiples of earnings and percentages of revenues, based on comparable sales within your specific industry.

  1. Match the Buyer to the Seller. We have an extensive database of buyers and sellers who are ready, willing, and able to make a deal.  We highly qualify our positions on both sides to ensure that there is a good potential match before serious discussions ensue, saving both seller and buyer significant time and energy.

  1. Facilitate Negotiation. Selling a business is emotional.  Our brokers manage that emotion in our role as intermediaries…we assume the role of referee in many cases.  Once emotion gets “on the table” it will be a win-lose or lose-lose.  We look for the win-win by reducing the emotional influence.

  1. Guide and Manage Due Diligence. After an asset purchase agreement is executed, it is time to get to work.  The buyer needs to know the business inside and out, and the seller wants to know the buyer just as well.  At this point, much information on both sides is shared and disseminated with guidance from your Business Broker.  Our job is to manage the due diligence process so that by the time sellers and buyers get to the closing table, there will be no surprises.

Start now on your Exit Strategy.  The decisions you make today will impact the results for tomorrow!
