Arkansas – Rice, Bauxite and Wal-Mart: How Arkansas’ Economy has Continued to Diversify

Arkansas – “The Natural State”. Agriculture has been a large part of the Arkansas economy since the 19th century. Starting with cotton, farmers in the state have expanded their production to soybeans and are now the number one producer of rice in the nation. But, the Arkansas economy has continued to grow and is now a leading producer of poultry as well. This diversification has made Arkansas into a southern hub of economic activity and growth.

With the growth of big business, the introduction of stores like Wal-Mart, started in Rogers, AK and the explosion of mining, the state’s economy has continued to expand into new markets. Now the number one producer of bauxite in the country, Arkansas also has large mining operations extracting bromine, petroleum and natural gas from the landscape as well.

The US Army installation, Pine Bluff Arsenal, serves as a training and holding facility for the United States Armed Services and provide logistical support to the Red Cross and Homeland Security. This military presence has created jobs in services as well as munitions production and storage.

With new tax regulations moving forward, including a gradual elimination of taxes on manufacturers, Arkansas is becoming a haven for manufacturing firms across the United States and globally. These new enterprises are expected to boost the Arkansas economy and job market as the state continues to recover from the recession.

As the manufacturing sector in Arkansas continues to grow, so will the small business sector. It is this growth that has spurred Sunbelt Network franchisee, Erik de Renouard of Little Rock, to open two additional offices to better serve the needs of entrepreneurs in the state of Arkansas. “The market in Arkansas has remained strong and there is confidence in our local business community,” said de Renouard. He currently serves as a Commissioner for the City of Hot Springs Central Improvement District and is a member of the International Business Brokers Association. de Renouard offers his clients a wealth of professional experience in management, marketing and finance to facilitate the buying and selling of business.
