TRANSFERABILITY.\u00a0 This concept drives value and marketability of the business.\u00a0 The higher the transferability factor, the greater likelihood the business can be sold, and sold at the price the owner is seeking.<\/p>\n<p>Critical Transferability items include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Revenue\/Profits<\/li>\n<li>Employees<\/li>\n<li>Customers<\/li>\n<li>Management Team<\/li>\n<li>Processes and Procedures<\/li>\n<li>Suppliers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After adjusted earnings, the most important value driver in a business is the employee, including the management team.\u00a0\u00a0 Employees create the business\u2019 value proposition, they are the interface to the customer, they provide the products\/services that drive revenue and profits.\u00a0 Without a strong employee group the buyer sees risk.\u00a0 The higher the risk, the lower the price and the fewer potential buyers.<\/p>\n<p>And your response to the above &#8211; \u201cGreat, tell me something I don\u2019t already know.\u201d\u00a0 Finding quality employees is the most difficult area for an owner today, especially, if the employees need to have technical skills.\u00a0 Every business owner we talk to in the manufacturing, HVAC, plumbing and electrical fields are frustrated by the lack of available talent.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting this topic has the risk of sounding trite and\/or condescending.\u00a0 I don\u2019t mean to be anything of the sort.\u00a0 Believe me, I understand this is probably the hardest problem for a business owner to solve right now.\u00a0 However, there are a few things I\u2019ve picked up in working with businesses over the last 10 years.\u00a0 So, here goes:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0 Is it worth the time, energy and expense to crack the code on this?<\/p>\n<p>The average multiple of adjusted earnings for small- to-medium sized businesses nationally is 2.4X.\u00a0 So what is the cost or gain of building the strongest employee group possible?<\/p>\n<p>In the example below, using the same adjusted earnings of $200,000, you can see the difference in value between a company laser focused on improving the employee base and one that doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 Note the difference in the Earnings Track Record.\u00a0 A business that has ongoing challenges with being understaffed or under skilled will always have lumpy earnings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/dayton-oh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/102\/2017\/03\/March-Newsletter-pic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1773\" src=\"\/dayton-oh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/102\/2017\/03\/March-Newsletter-pic.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back to the main question, is it worth it to crack the code on this?\u00a0 Absolutely.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0 Delegating<\/p>\n<p>Hearing the word \u201cdelegate\u201d can have the same effect as nails on a chalk board to many business owners.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Tried it, didn\u2019t work!\u00a0\u00a0 Add to this the fact that most owners don\u2019t feel comfortable with pushing down authority into the organization.<\/p>\n<p>Delegating is not a God-given talent.\u00a0 In fact, for entrepreneurs, it often doesn\u2019t fit their personality.\u00a0 The good news is that delegation is a skill that can be learned like QuickBooks or any other tool in your business.<\/p>\n<p>The importance of becoming a good delegator can\u2019t be over stated, it drives everything else.\u00a0 Delegating is the tool by which an owner can develop and lead a management team.\u00a0 It is how an owner extricates themselves from working in the business to on the business.\u00a0 And finally, it is what will provide the time and support within your organization to better hire and train employees.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0 Developing a management\/supervisory team<\/p>\n<p>See above.\u00a0 You must be able to delegate to be effective in this area.\u00a0 In addition to delegating you need to share \u2013 another difficult trait for some owners.\u00a0 You need to share your vision, as well as, your challenges.\u00a0 And you must create an atmosphere to allow those team members to help you solve the challenges.\u00a0 Finding, hiring and training employees is one of the areas your team can provide assistance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0 Be a Teacher<\/p>\n<p>The adage about teaching someone to fish versus giving them a fish is a key to employee development and retention.\u00a0 When a machine shop owner is always jumping in to do the machine set-up or doing the hard parts rather than taking the time to train an employee, they have solved a short-term issue but created a long-term problem.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Both the owner and key supervisors need to be teachers at all times.\u00a0 In this situation, not only don\u2019t critical production issues not get resolved, but the employee feels diminished and doesn\u2019t grow, leading to turnover.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5)\u00a0 You Need to Be the Solution<\/p>\n<p>There will not be a magic wand waved that solves this skilled employment issue.\u00a0 An owner needs to \u201cown\u201d the solution.\u00a0 A plan needs to be put in place and followed.\u00a0 Again, this will be a function of time, energy and creativity.\u00a0 Once again using the machine shop as an example, an owner needs to engage with its trade association, local trade schools, high schools and community colleges.\u00a0 There are recruiting firms that focus on skilled labor industries.\u00a0 Yes, it may be expense if hire through an agency, but the real cost is in missing deadlines, losing customers and having a business with a reduced value.\u00a0 In the absence of traditional apprentice programs, an owner may need to create entry positions and internships to find people who are interested in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Of course this article only skims the surface.\u00a0 The hope is to create an understanding of the Return on Investment proposition to justify making the effort and
