5 Ways to be a More Effective Leader

Being an effective leader is an important part of running a business. Whether you have two employees or 200, great leadership is essential for the success of your business. There are certain leadership traits that come easily to some, and not so easily to others. No matter the case, take time to invest in becoming the effective leader that you want to be. Here are a few ways to get started:

  1. Learn to connect. Although it may not come easily, it is important to be approachable and relatable to your employees and fellow leaders. Use empathy to connect genuinely with those around you, taking time to share in their thoughts and experiences. This shows that you are a compassionate person and effective leader, one who is invested in the well-being of the individuals as well as the business. People thrive in a connected, supportive environment so make a concerted effort to practice this skill if it doesn’t come naturally.
  2. Listen. As an effective leader, it is essential to listen, and listen well. Take time to understand what your employees need and desire from the workplace and then follow through on the things that you say you will do. As an effective leader, you need to show that you are really listening, not simply smiling and nodding through a conversation. Also, no one likes to be lectured at or be the recipient of barked orders. You will learn a lot about your employees and yourself the more you are able to listen and absorb what is going on around you.
  3. Earn respect. Earning respect as an effective leader is easier said than done! First of all, you cannot just assume authority, even if you were bestowed a leadership position. By connecting with those around you and showing areas of success, you will be able to earn respect. You don’t need to know everything, but to be resourceful, gracious, and willing to ask for help. An effective leader needs to perform their duties well, in addition to showing commitment to the business and the people.
  4. Believe in your vision and share it with others. Few things demonstrate an effective leader more than a clear and exciting vision. You must fully believe in your vision for the business, and for your own career, in order for anyone else to follow. Also, your vision needs to be approachable yet challenging in order to entice the rest of your company to join in the excitement. As an effective leader, you need to put your vision into words and explain how each person is a part of that vision.
  5. Surround yourself with great people. It is widely understood that you are only as good as your team. Hire carefully and expect a lot from your employees. Lead by example and inclusiveness and you will soon have a team that can handle almost anything!
